Partner Stephen G. Larson is once again recognized as one of the “Top 100 Lawyers in California” by the state’s leading legal newspaper, Daily Journal.
The annual special edition celebrates California attorneys doing cutting-edge legal work and who have had the most impact in the legal industry in the past year.
Marking his fifth consecutive year on the list of top attorneys, Stephen’s profile highlights his many successes during an unprecedented year, including securing a $65 million settlement for Colonies Partners and its co-managing partner Jeffrey Burum in two civil rights suits for the alleged retaliatory investigation and prosecution of Mr. Burum, which spanned over a decade and resulted in Mr. Burum’s full acquittal at trial.
“We were successful on everything,” Stephen states in his profile, noting the successful appearances before appellate courts, obtaining an adverse inference jury instruction sanction for spoliation of emails, and defeating summary judgment which paved the way for trial prior to the settlement.
In addition, the profile featured the one jury trial Stephen had during the COVID-19 shutdown, which was also his first general court-martial.
“We didn’t have what looked like a normal jury,” Stephen explains. “There were officers in uniforms and short haircuts and masks, very spit-and-polish and serious and somewhat daunting. The judge was a colonel. I felt like a fish-out-of-water.”
Despite his trepidations, Stephen secured a not-guilty verdict for his client. True to how Stephen approaches every case on a personal level to provide the best service to his clients, he notes, “You become close to the people you represent in their time of need. It’s the reason I became a lawyer.”
